During Hurricane Nicole in 2022, my uncle experienced a severe heart failure episode. His journey began with an Abiomed Impella heart pump, a device designed to support a failing heart, but ultimately required an LVAD implant as his heart function did not recover sufficiently for him to be a candidate for a heart transplant.
